enjoy this issue and have a happy + restful Sunday!
It’s been an exciting start to the new year for Studios.
Though the investment markets are cooling off, startup building and new venture creation are hotter than ever.
While this is good news for Venture Studios, it also means there’s more competition for great founder talent, bold ideas, and access to deals.
If you want to win in 2023, you need to build community.
There are plenty of business reasons that support community building including brand recognition, lead gen, and new customer acquisition— but the real benefit of community building for Studios comes from the direct access to talent.
Paul Graham often cites the YC network and cohort community as the “secret sauce” of their success. OnDeck does the same. As does DayOne and several of the largest VC firms that leverage network relationships to get in on great deals.
I recently wrote an article about the mechanics of building a robust community for your Studio and provided several examples of innovative Studios doing it well (including a Studio that leveraged its community to raise $200K+ via crowdfunding!)
Remember that community is a long-term investment — treat it as such.
Allocate team members and funds to the effort. Be authentic and open. Keep startup rules in play: build something people want and be obsessed with user experience.
