Welcome to the Startup Studio newsletter - we’re talking about EIRs today!
If you want to be a doctor, you go to medical school. If you want to be a lawyer, you go to law school. But what do you do if you want to be an entrepreneur?
It’s easy enough to say “just start a business” and write that question off… but if you really think about it, there’s a pre-defined career path from education to application for nearly every profession— except “innovation”.
This is where Startup Studios come in. That is the problem they solve in the world.
While accelerators help founders with traction go faster and venture capitalists help founders with PMF blitzscale, Studios come in at a much earlier milestone — sometimes even pre-idea.
I’m often approached by talented professionals looking for a way out of the corporate 9-5 (or more recently, brilliant minds who have found themselves unemployed due to massive tech company layoffs) and asked how to get started with a Studio.
These individuals bring a great deal of experience and domain expertise to the table, but often lack the “innovation education” to run off and build a venture on their own.
They look to Studios for this guidance. And as a Studio, you should be prepared to give it to them.
This is the time to “open the doors” and find a way to support a community of entrepreneurs who can eventually work with your Studio.
Give them access to your playbooks.
Give them opportunities to engage with your team and their peers.
Give them some support and some time.
Then watch as they return the favor many times over.
I believe Studios are responsible for leading the next generation of entrepreneurs.
It’s an important duty and one that can be accomplished at scale (even with a small team) if you’re willing to put in the time and effort to build community the right way.
If you’re an aspiring entrepreneur interested in joining a Studio as an EIR, I encourage you to get in touch — I’ll see how I can help!
For more context on the Entrepreneur In Residence role, read this article I wrote a while back. It’s a great resource for both potential EIRs and Studios alike!
