Welcome to the Startup Studio newsletter - let’s dive in!
As a follow-up to last week’s discussion on the difference between Startup Studios and Venture Studios, I want to share an article I recently published with my opinion on the topic.
Here’s the TL;DR:
At a high level, the two models are very similar.
Both models leverage shared resources and repeatable processes to launch new startup companies
Both models rely on economies of scale to launch successful startups faster and cheaper each time around
Both models build their own ideas and bring in EIRs with outside ideas
Both models build startups in parallel
In my opinion, the biggest difference between Startup Studios and Venture Studios is the funding source.
Venture Studios raise a fund — Startup Studios do not
Venture Studios have fiduciary duties to LPs — Startup Studios do not
Venture Studios invest in spin-outs at the Seed Stage (and beyond) — Startup Studios do not
Venture Studios are under serious time pressure to produce exits and return funds to investors — Startup Studios aren’t
